Introduction: Ford Low-Cost Electric Vehicles
Ford Motor Company is set to reveal more details about its new low-cost electric vehicles (EVs) and a new EV platform at a special event in Kentucky on August 11. Ford CEO Jim Farley has described this as a “Model T moment” for the company, echoing the historic achievement of the Model T over a century ago, which made cars affordable and accessible to the masses. This announcement signals a significant shift in Ford’s electric vehicle strategy, aiming to bring affordable and mainstream EVs to the market.

Ford’s New Strategy and Challenges
During its recent second-quarter earnings call, Ford disclosed that its electric vehicle division, Ford E, incurred a loss of approximately $1.3 billion in Q2 2025. Additionally, sales of its flagship electric vehicles, such as the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E, have declined. Ford also faced a $800 million hit due to tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
Despite these challenges, Ford remains committed to strengthening its position in the electric vehicle market. Farley stated that the August 11 event will mark the beginning of a new chapter for Ford, introducing a new EV platform and a range of affordable vehicles equipped with advanced technology, efficiency, space, and features.
New Low-Cost EV Platform
Ford’s new EV platform is part of a “skunkworks” project led by former Tesla executive Alan Clarke. The project includes experts from companies like Tesla, Rivian, Apple, and Lucid Motors. This platform will support multiple vehicle types, potentially including a compact SUV, a small pickup truck, and possibly a delivery vehicle.
Ford aims to compete with Chinese automakers like Geely and BYD, known for their affordable and high-quality electric vehicles, through this new platform. Farley emphasized that the platform will help Ford reduce costs and improve its supply chain, enabling the production of more affordable EVs.
First Vehicle: Mid-Size Pickup Truck
Speculation suggests that Ford’s first new electric vehicle will be a mid-size pickup truck, slated for launch in 2027. This truck is expected to be larger than the Ford Maverick but smaller than the F-150 Lightning, targeting a key segment in the competitive EV market.
