Hero MotoCorp, India’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer, has officially discontinued its most premium and largest displacement motorcycle, the Hero Mavrick 440, just 18 months after its launch in March 2024.

The primary reason for the Mavrick 440’s discontinuation was its dismal sales performance. Despite its technical prowess, the bike failed to resonate with Indian consumers, with monthly sales often dipping into double or single digits. In the first nine months of FY2025, Hero sold only 3,214 units of the Mavrick 440, compared to 8,974 units of the Harley-Davidson X440, which shared its platform but enjoyed greater brand appeal. By April 2025, sales had plummeted to near zero, prompting Hero to halt production and stop dispatching units to dealers for the last three months.

Despite its market failure, the Mavrick 440 was lauded for its ride quality and practicality. BikeWale called it “possibly one of the best motorcycles ever made by Hero MotoCorp” due to its punchy engine, easy handling, and comfortable suspension. Its 4kg lighter weight compared to the X440 resulted in a competitive power-to-weight ratio, and the bike excelled in low- and mid-range performance, making it ideal for city rides and relaxed highway cruising up to 110 kmph. The inclusion of modern features like Bluetooth connectivity and dual-channel ABS added to its appeal.
The discontinuation has left some owners feeling disappointed. A post on X from a user who purchased the Mavrick 440 last year expressed frustration, stating they felt “cheated” by Hero’s decision to discontinue the bike so soon after its launch. This highlights the challenges Hero faces in building trust in the premium segment, where customer loyalty is hard-won.
