Central Railway Mega Block: Its effect on Mumbai Local Trains

Mumbai can be referred to as the city that never sleeps: it relies largely on the suburban train system, which carries millions of passengers daily.
On 10 August 2025, Central Railway had all the mega blocks to make major infrastructural changes. This impacted the Harbour Line, the Trans-Harbour Line, and the Kalyan-Ambernath-Badlapur Line.
What Happened?
- Harbour Line Vashi
- Between 12.45 AM and 10.45 AM, installation of a new electronic interlocking system to enhance
the scheduling and safety of trains took place at Vashi station. Special trains
used to operate during the block between CSMT and Mankhurd.

- Between 12:30 AM and 5:30 AM services were suspended to allow road overbridge slab casting work.
- Kalyan–Ambernath–Badlapur
- Foot overbridge and road overbridge girder work power and traffic blocks were taken till morning.
Effects on the Passengers
- Some of the local trains were short-terminated at their stations, such as Nerul, Vashi, and Belapur, or cancelled.
- Train schedules atnight and early morning were altered.
- Long-distance trains that were unable to go their normal routes were redirected through other routes with additional stops at Panvel and Thane.
- Congestion was experienced in major stations such as Thane, and other bus services were organized.
The Importance of Mega Blocks
These blocks aid in building strength to rail lines, bridges, and signalling systems, in the long-term safety and punctuality. The new electronic system at Vashi will enhance the speed of trains, their timings, and their dependability.

- Remember other methods of traveling, such as bus or metro.
- Make trips so that they do not coincide with block times
